New use cases through EU Coastal Monitoring Pilot Demonstrations

The National Collaboration Program, the Copernicus Marine Service has launched a new call for tender to develop pilot exemplary use cases of marine coastal downscaling monitoring activities. These activities support the implementation of EU Environmental Directives at the national level. Fifteen projects have been selected for 18 months in response to this call, and their first milestone (i.e. delivering the first of the two use case stories) was reached in February 2024.

The coastal services developed within this call are spread across European waters while providing data and tools to improve the health, safety, and sustainability of marine environments and the activities that take place within them. They are focused on:

  • improving maritime safety through sea ice forecasting (1),
  • supporting sustainable practices like aquaculture (5, 8),
  • enhancing disaster preparedness (4),
  • supporting blue economy sectors (9, 11, 12), and
  • ensuring compliance with EU environmental directives.

Overall, they address a range of needs, from water quality monitoring and forecasting to renewable energy development while contributing to a broader effort of protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring their sustainable use.
